Canadian Food Inspection Agency expands beef recall

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has expanded its recall of beef products potentially contaminated with E. coli for the third time since the recall was first announced Sunday.

The expanded recall includes ground beef, burgers, meat loaf, sausages, pepperoni and beef jerky sold at Co-op stores in Alberta, B.C., Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Yukon; Sobeys/IGA stores in Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan; and Presto and Club Entrepot stores in Quebec.

The affected products were sold from Aug. 24 to Sept. 16 and include unlabelled and unbranded ground beef products.

A list of the products added to the recall is available at CFIA's website.

Manufacturer XL Foods Inc., based in Edmonton, as well as various retailers, distributors and processors are voluntarily recalling the affected products from stores, the CFIA said.

No illnesses associated with the consumption of the affected ground beef have been reported, CFIA said.

Food contaminated with E. coli may not look or smell spoiled. Eating food contaminated with the bacteria may cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses, CFIA warns.
